Today is the Day

Recently the Band of Light received a letter from a maker of stairlifts, addressed, somewhat amusingly, to a Mr. ‘Jospeh (sic) Speakes’ and suggesting that a stairlift might help Joseph to retain his independence and confidence. A week later a second, identical letter arrived. Jane subsequently rang the company in question, only to discover that they are often the victim of hoaxers, who complete and send in the coupons featured in the company’s adverts with an address and name that is not their own in order to play a practical joke on someone or to cause mischief.

I couldn’t help but see the funny side, as I’m sure Joseph did, the image of an aged Joseph creakily trying to climb the stairs of his little home after an evening spent watching soaps and drinking coco being a far cry from the Light-filled truth of his existence.

There is, however, a delicious irony in the letters, in that it is not Joseph who needs help getting ‘upstairs’ but, sadly, many of us. And by ‘upstairs’ I’m not referring to the top of the landing, but rather to the next stage of our existence, something that all too few of us give any thought or consideration to, pushing our ultimate and inevitable departure from this illusion out of our minds until the moment when it actually occurs... at which point, frankly, it’s far too late to gain a working knowledge of the spiritual spheres.

Am I suggesting that we brood over our deaths daily whilst we are here getting on with our lives? Absolutely not. What I - and, more importantly, Joseph - are asking souls to consider is that, if we are eventually destined to depart this life (which we are), and if we are destined to continue to exist when the physical body has been left behind (which we are), then we surely owe it to ourselves to be as prepared for the journey ahead of us as we possibly can be. ...If you were going on a vitally important, life-changing trip to unknown territory you would at very least look at a map and try to gain some knowledge of your destination before setting off, wouldn’t you?

Many years ago when visiting my spiritual teacher I clairvoyantly encountered a recently departed scientist who had had a heart attack in a wood and had been standing, confused, next to his lifeless physical body for some weeks. Becoming aware of me he began to argue, stating that I was a figment of his imagination and that I couldn’t possibly exist as he didn’t believe in life after death. I explained to him that despite his beliefs he must still obviously exist as he was conscious and able to have a conversation with me, but he would have none of it. It was only at the point at which his mother appeared beside me that he dropped his (il)logical argument, moved to her side with a smile on his face and the two spirits disappeared into a brilliant white Light.

My point in recounting this incident is that the gentleman’s closed mind had prevented him, via his own free will, from progressing after his physical death, and it was only through the careful intervention of a number of advanced spirits in bringing him and I together to ‘chat’ that he could be convinced, via the appearance of his mother, to move on into the next stage of his existence.

Incidents such as the one above happen more often than you might think, with bewildered, newly departed souls often not knowing what to do next because it has never occurred to them in life to look further than their nine-to-five existence or the next holiday, leaving themselves completely unprepared for their ultimate and inevitable change of state and surroundings.

Here’s Joseph to give a further spin on things:

‘Today is important because you may not have a tomorrow, and today is the day when you should get your life in order.’

If we’re not going to die (we’re not); if life continues (it does), then there’s an implication in that knowledge that applies to each of our lives, which is this: I’m not going to die. How, therefore, must I live?

Without the get-out-of-jail-free reassurance of oblivion, whereby we can do exactly what we want in life without consequence as we will be nothing but dust after death, a knowledge of life after death has to inevitably make us re-examine the way we treat others, this planet and ourselves whilst we are here.

In later life, and when faced with a potential argument, Joan, my spiritual teacher, would say to the person attempting to cause discord (often no spring chicken themselves):

‘I’m sorry, but I won’t argue with you, because to do so would jeopardise the future of my immortal soul. Also, at your age, I would have thought that, rather than arguing, you would be giving some consideration to the next place!’

Joseph considers a working knowledge of what awaits us beyond physical death so vital that he spent the best part of two years (from our perspective) dictating a book on the subject through me. Appropriately titled Your Life After Death, it is constantly in demand across the world, which is gratifying to us as, daily, more and more souls are addressing and contemplating the biggest question we will ever ask: What comes next for me?

Finally, and addressing the hoaxer who caused the two stairlift letters to be sent us: Do yourself a favour, Matey Boy... while there’s still time, find out all you can about the next life and consider your moves in this one very carefully. Otherwise it might take far more than a stairlift to elevate you to where you should be once you leave this life behind.

...And that’s no laughing matter.
